“Just imagining an alternate reality where sometime from the age of 16 years to 25 years the name of the person we’re "meant to love” appears imprinted on our wrists.
Maybe Anna will find “William” imprinted on her wrist and vice versa for William and they’re cool with that. Anna and William get married and live happily ever after in a quaint house with a white picket fence and three kids and a golden retriever.
But maybe Michael will find “Louis” imprinted on his wrist and he’ll stare at it horrified that his parents might (would) positively hate him, so even though he’d give the world for Louis, Michael never tells his best friend anything. Instead he wears a watch over the name and goes out to propose to Lucy.
Maybe Lucy looks at Michael’s hidden imprint but never asks. Why should she, when he never pries at the bangle on her own wrist hiding “Cecelia”?
Andrew comes out of the shower and finds “Samantha” on his wrist and he’s terrified and confused because Samantha is his best friend ever - Samantha who lets him borrow her eyeliner and crash at her place when his parents kick him out for cavorting with boys.
Maybe Janet wakes up one day to find “Mandy” imprinted on her wrist. She stares at it and rubs her eyes again and again until they’re raw and red and tearing but her vision isn’t impaired. And she tries to rub it out, because she’s scared and ashamed.
Maybe Mandy discovers “Janet” on her own wrist and hates it, but before she can tell her long time boyfriend turned fiance Nathan about it, he finds out and shoves her away, sneering about how he “doesn’t want anything to do with non-breeders”. It breaks her heart that 7 years together can’t win over a label on her wrist.
Meanwhile Peter’s imprint surfaces and he locks himself in his room and doesn’t come out for days. But when he does, his eyes are red-rimmed and his mother comes to wrap her arms around him in a tight hug, trying to comfort him because his “Sally” has already gone to a better place.
And Carl? Carl waits and waits while all his friends find their partners. But his imprint never appears.“
